Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday is the beginning of the season of Lent.  The characteristic themes of Lent are self-examination, penitence, self-denial, study, and preparation for Easter, to which almsgiving has traditionally been added.

Ashes are an ancient sign of penitence; from the Middle Ages it became the custom to begin Lent by being marked in ash with the sign of the cross.

Thought of the Week

““I read in a book that a man called Christ went about doing good. It distresses me that I am so easily satisfied with just going about.” (Toyohiko Kagawa)
